‘Homeless Chic’ Gets Literal

The concept of “homeless chic” has been taken to entirely new level. Last fall Vogue Italia publish a cover with models looking homeless in tattered clothing. Now, an actual homeless man, known on the net as Brother Sharp, has become a style sensation. The man resides in the city of Ningbo, China where a fellow resident took his picture and began circulating it on the Web.

Bloggers and commenters have been enthralled by the man’s moviestar (he’s been compared to a Dolce & Gabbana model) looks and layering choices. Brother Sharp reportedly also has a thing for women’s clothing, which has also scored him point with fashion lovers.

The man’s Web fame is a disturbingly literal representation of a style of dress that’s been praised by the likes of Erin Wasson. The model/designer told Nylon TV that she thought the homeless people on Venice Beach had the best style. She later explained that she admired how free and uncomplicated their style is.

Is Fashion Week an Endangered Species?

In recent years the fashion world – and in particular Fashion Week – has moved farther away from exclusivity and further into popular culture. The result has been to transform the biannual season of fashion week shows from trade show to entertainment junket. The events have become an expensive media circus and some of the big wigs have had enough.

New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn was not so pleased with what designers had to offer in Milan this year and even less pleased, it seems, with the city’s abbreviated fashion week schedule. “An eternity of bad clothes crammed into four days,” said Horyn. She continued, “with editors raging like shut-ins… and the blogger Bryanboy announcing on Twitter that he had scored a free fur jacket from Dolce & Gabbana.” Hmm… do we detect a bit of annoyance at the so-call democratization of fashion, Ms. Horyn?

Yet it’s not just blogger-hating critics that are frustrated with the state of affairs in the garment biz. According to The Cut blog, T magazine editor Stefano Tonchi thinks that the entire system of twice per year fashion blitzes is completely outdated. “Are biannual fashion shows really the way to present fashion when stores need new merchandise every week?” he said. “What does it mean to run across the planet to see similar collections over and over again every six months?”

Great! Just when the show invites are starting to roll into our mailboxes, someone wants ruin all the fun. They may have a valid point, but before they tear it down, we’ll enjoy the crazy, thrilling, stressful, awe-inspiring institution known as Fashion Week. Cheers!

Fashion news: Oprah’s Online ‘Yard’ Sale

Ever wish you could walk a day in Oprah’s shoes? Well now you can – literally! The television super mogul is cleaning out her closets and selling a haul of incredible shoes, handbags and clothing. Oprah has teamed with eBay and the proceeds generated from the sale of the TV queen’s discarded items will go to support Oprah’s Leadership Academy – a school for gifted, but underprivileged girls in South Africa.

Even if these items came from Wal-Mart I’d bet people would be eager to snap up a piece just to have something that Oprah Winfrey owned. But, of course, the items are high end, with labels like Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, and Valentino up for grabs. Some of the items were even worn on Winfrey’s famous talk show. The auction goes on through March 11, 2010.

The items for sale were gleaned from what must have been a bulging closet. Oprah is a billionaire, after all. The O magazine website has a snippet of her spring cleaning experience, including her refusal to get rid of a pair of ivory lace knee-high boots. “They’re closet jewelry. They make a closet look good,” she says. Closet jewelry: something every woman needs.

Fashion news: Naomi Hits Driver, Driver Says He’s Sorry

The famously short-fused Naomi Campbell has allegedly gotten herself into another scrape. While en route to some supermodel-worthy appointment or other in New York City, Campbell reportedly has an disagreement with her driver, after which she struck him and fled on foot. Sounds like a pretty wacky story, but with her history it’s not such a leap to believe it to be true.

The incident caused the driver – one Miodrag Mejdina – to call the cops on the catwalk vet, but he later decided not to press charges. After two days of silence, Campbell finally gave a statement about the incident, implicitly denying any wrongdoing: “I have worked very hard on correcting my previous wrongdoings and I will not be held hostage to my past,” she said.

An apology from Mejdina implies one of two things: either 1) Naomi really is innocent or 2) she’s got some kind of dominatrix power over this guy, and he likes it!

“I had an argument with Naomi Campbell. I got angry and overreacted,” Mejdina wrote. “I regret involving the police. This whole thing has been blown out of proportion and I apologize to Ms. Campbell for causing that to happen.”

Since T by Alexander Wang debuted in spring 2009, the diffusion line has been the average Jane’s access to one of the moment’s hottest fashion labels. But since no woman can live on tees and tanks alone, we’re ecstatic to hear that T is expanding.

While Wang’s fashion cred builds and his main line collection evolves to include more structural, tailored pieces the designer says he still believes “the whole idea of T-shirt dressing.
